Alan builds the Arctic Truck (42038)

Alan sent over his completed Arctic Truck build. The 42038 is one of those sets that impresses well beyond what the piece count suggests. 749 pieces, but eight-wheel drive with independent suspension on all four axles. Push it across a desk and every wheel articulates independently.

It is a quick build, probably two hours, but the engineering packed into it makes it feel like a much bigger project than it is.

What makes this one

The suspension. All eight wheels are independently sprung and the articulation across uneven surfaces is genuinely satisfying. The orange and white polar expedition colour scheme works well too. The set also has a Power Functions motor mount built into the chassis, so if you want to motorise it later the groundwork is already there.

The 42038 also has an alternate model on the box, a flatbed truck. If you want a second build from the same set, the instructions are on the LEGO website. For most subscribers the main model is plenty though, and Alan’s photos show it off well.

Alan has worked through enough of the library now that his photos are useful in a different way to product shots. They show the kit as a builder actually sees it: on a table, built in normal light, with the little mechanical details doing the talking.

If you have built Arctic Truck and spotted something I have missed, send it over. The member posts are better when they feel like a record of what people are actually building, not just a list of sets we happen to stock.
