Another one bites the Chiron
This is one of three member build posts we have on the Bugatti Chiron (42083), and I keep publishing them because members keep building it. It is one of the most-built kits in the library. This member built one, Alan built one, and a Master Builder member built another. The pictures on this page are LEGO’s own images of the set rather than this member’s build.
The reason members keep writing about the Chiron is the gearbox. It was the first Technic set with the orange rotary changeover catch, the part Huw at Brickset said would change how gearboxes get designed. Eight forward gears are shifted in sequence by paddles under the steering wheel, each push turning an axle a quarter turn so the orange catches move the selector rings, with a separate forward and reverse selector in the middle of the car. You can feel each shift click through. It is easy to spend a while just working through the gears on the finished model before it goes on a shelf.
The real Chiron runs an 8-litre quad-turbocharged W16 producing around 1,500 bhp, and LEGO matched that with a W16 engine block with moving pistons at 1:8 scale. The two-tone blue is dark azure over dark blue, the combination Bugatti has made its trademark. Independent suspension on all four corners, steering from the steering wheel, opening doors, an opening bonnet over a small front boot with Bugatti-branded luggage, and a rear wing raised and tilted with a speed key.
The 8-speed gearbox is the reason this kit is a library staple. It is built as its own unit in the first box, before any bodywork, and the W16 goes on top of it, so click through every gear before the engine goes on. Once the car is finished, turn it over: a gap in the floor lets you watch the lower selector rings slide across as you pull a paddle.
The useful thing about a second or third member build is that it stops the post feeling like a one-off. Different builders notice different parts of the same kit, and the photos always come out slightly differently.
That is why I keep publishing repeat builds when they come in. If a kit keeps going out, that tells me something about the library. If members keep sending photos, that tells me even more.
