Car Transporter (42098)
One of our members tackled the Car Transporter and sent through photos. Three separate builds in one box: the truck, the trailer and a small blue car that loads and unloads via the fold-out ramps. 2,493 pieces across the lot.
The upper deck tilts on a knob-driven mechanism so the cars sit level during transport. The blue car is a proper little Technic model in its own right, with working steering, not a placeholder. The cab opens, there’s sleeper cab detail inside, and the whole thing is one of the longer footprints in the library when fully extended.
Everything is worked by knobs and gears; there is nothing hydraulic. The trailer’s long rear ramps fold out to the floor, and a knob near the front drives a worm gear and a run of long linkages that lower the rear ramp. The upper decks raise on their own knob-driven mechanisms. Roll the blue car up, and yellow stoppers hold it in its bay until you drop them to release it. The rig can carry up to three vehicles, so there is room for cars of your own.
The piece count is split three ways, which changes how the build feels. You finish the blue car first and set it aside, then build the truck and the trailer. By the time the ramp mechanism goes together you’ve already got a car ready to load onto it. Good pacing for the complexity level.
One thing worth knowing: the model is long. Check you have a decent run of table or shelf before you start: it needs the space when fully extended with both decks out.
