This one comes up more than any other set I do not own. Somebody sees the Huracán Tecnica in a shop, likes the look of it, and asks when it is going into the library. The answer is that it is not, and I would rather explain why than keep saying no.
It is a good little set. That is not the problem.
Lamborghini Huracán Tecnica (42161)
806 pieces, a V10 with moving pistons, working steering and opening doors, in that Verde Selvans green. The instruction booklet is one of the clearest in the Technic range and the proportions are right. If you want one, buy one. It is under fifty quid and you will enjoy an evening with it.
What it is not is a set you need a subscription for.
Where the line sits, and why
Brick Club only carries kits with a recommended price over 100 pounds. That is written on the subscription page and I hold to it. The Huracán Tecnica is 46.99.
The reason is not snobbery about small sets. It is that the whole point of renting is to build things that are awkward to own. A 47-pound car is not awkward to own. You can buy it outright for less than two months of a subscription, build it in an evening, and put it on a shelf without it becoming a problem.
A 3,600-piece flagship is a different question entirely. It costs several hundred pounds, it takes over a table for a fortnight, and then it sits there being enormous forever. That is the problem worth solving, and it is the only problem I am trying to solve.
Every box that goes out is a set worth over 100 pounds, and you never get the same kit twice. That is the promise, and putting cheap sets into the rotation would quietly break it.
It also means there is no such thing as a disappointing month. Nobody opens a Brick Club box and finds a fifty-quid car in it.
If it is the short build you are after
The thing people usually mean when they ask about the Huracán is not really the Huracán. It is “I want something I can finish this week.” The library has that, it just costs more than fifty pounds to buy.
The Porsche is the closest match in feel. 834 pieces, but a full 1:8 car with a working gearbox and independent suspension, which the Huracán does not have at 1:18. If it is specifically a Lamborghini you want, the Revuelto is the one, and its V12 is a far more interesting engine than the Tecnica’s V10.
The Dodge Charger is the one I would put in front of somebody who wants a recognisable car and a build that finishes. It is 1,077 pieces of chrome and attitude and it takes a couple of evenings.
