3,893 pieces. One of the best subscriber photo sets we’ve had.
One of our members built the McLaren P1 (42172) and sent 17 photos. We picked the best ones. The set is the biggest in the Brick Club library right now, and these photos do it justice.
The P1 is a licensed replica of the McLaren P1 hybrid hypercar at 1:8 scale. The orange and black livery matches the McLaren MSO spec. The build takes a long weekend if you pace it sensibly.

The V8 sub-assembly alone is a couple of hours. You can see 12 pistons moving through the rear once the bodywork is on. Most people spend a session just getting the engine block right before they start on anything else.

The signature feature. They open at the correct angle with a single motion, and the mechanism is one of the most satisfying in any Technic set. This member got a clean shot of both doors up at once. Worth seeing in person.

These photos also show the build process before the body panels went on. If you are renting this one, this is what you are working towards. The chassis and engine sub-assembly are the bulk of the time.

The P1 is the biggest kit in the library at 3,893 pieces. It is an Expert-rated build. The V8 sub-assembly is the trickiest section; the rest builds logically if you follow the instructions in order. The dihedral door mechanism requires patience but pays off. Rated 8-9 hours for an experienced Technic builder.

This is exactly why I like putting member builds on the blog. The official images tell you what a kit is supposed to look like. Member photos show what it feels like once someone has actually sat down, opened the bags, and worked through it.
If you have just finished McLaren P1, send over a few photos. It does not need to be a full studio setup. A clean table, a finished build, and a few notes on what stood out are enough.
Rent the McLaren P1 and send us your photos
Subscribers get one kit at a time, free post both ways, and as long as they need to build it. When they are done, it goes back and the next one ships out.
