The flat-6 that hangs out the back

A member sent over two photos of the Porsche 911 RSR (42096) recently built. Good shots of the car at different stages, including the rear where the flat-6 is clearly visible through the bodywork. That engine placement is the whole point of this kit. In the real 911 RSR, the flat-6 sits behind the rear axle, overhanging past the rear bumper. LEGO reproduced it faithfully, and you can see the moving pistons through the engine cover.

The 911 RSR is one of the endurance racing cars, competing at Le Mans, Daytona, and Sebring with the Porsche Motorsport works team. The livery on the LEGO version is white with red and black Porsche Motorsport stripes. It is a cleaner, more focused build than the big V12 supercars, which some members find more enjoyable.

What makes this one interesting

The flat-6 is positioned behind the rear axle, not above it. That is the real Porsche configuration, and the reason the 911 handles the way it does. In the LEGO version the engine hangs out the back of the car, pistons visible, and it is the first thing you notice when you pick it up. 1,580 pieces at advanced level, building time around 4 to 5 hours.

This is exactly why I like putting member builds on the blog. The official images tell you what a kit is supposed to look like. Member photos show what it feels like once someone has actually sat down, opened the bags, and worked through it.

If you have just finished Porsche 911 RSR, send over a few photos. It does not need to be a full studio setup. A clean table, a finished build, and a few notes on what stood out are enough.
