LEGO Technic Lamborghini Sian FKP 37 (42115): Chris Haydock Build

Member Build

Chris Haydock’s Lamborghini Sian FKP 37

Chris sent over progress photos while he was mid-build, which I always like to see. The 42115 is one of the bigger kits in the library, 3,696 pieces, and it earns its Expert rating. The V12 sub-assembly alone takes a fair amount of time before the bodywork even starts going on.

This post covers both the in-progress shots Chris shared and the completed model. The scissor doors are the standout feature on this kit, and they work properly, opening at the correct angle. The rear engine cover lifts off to show the full V12 layout underneath.

The Sian is the hybrid V12 supercar Lamborghini unveiled at Frankfurt in 2019, the first Lamborghini with a hybrid drivetrain. LEGO used it as the basis for one of the flagship Technic Expert kits in 2020, and it shows in the piece count. The V12 engine has moving pistons visible through the rear cover, the scissor doors open at the correct angle, and the front and rear suspension work. That is a lot packed into the box for 3,696 pieces.

Chris built this mid-subscription and was kind enough to photograph it as it went together, so you can see the chassis and drivetrain before the yellow bodywork goes on. That is where most of the interesting engineering is: the suspension geometry, the V12 sub-assembly, the steering column running to the front wheels.

On the build

The V12 sub-assembly is where most of the time goes on this kit. It is worth taking it slowly because the engine goes in before much of the rear bodywork, and access gets tight once the rear panels are on. Chris photographed it at exactly the right stage, before the bodywork goes on and the interesting stuff disappears inside.

Want to build this?

Chris’s photos are exactly why I like putting member builds on the blog. You get the clean finished model, but you also get the in-between stages where the chassis and mechanisms are still visible. That is the part Technic fans usually want to see.

If you have photos from a Brick Club build, send them over. Finished shots are great, but progress shots are often even more useful.

LEGO Technic Service Truck (42008): Member Build

Pieces1,276
Year2013
Build time3-4 hrs
Models2
DifficultyAdvanced

The 42008 Service Truck is a 2013 set, one of the older kits in the Brick Club library. It does not have the piece count of the modern flagships, but it earns its place. The rear crane arm works manually, the outriggers deploy to stabilise the truck when the crane is in use, and the whole thing comes together in a compact, purposeful build that takes most of a morning. One of those sets that shows the older Technic era held up just fine.

Set 42008

A working service crane in 1,276 pieces

The 42008 is built around a rear-mounted crane arm with a hook at the end. The crane extends upward, rotates, and the hook lowers on a chain. It is manually operated, which keeps the mechanism clear and satisfying to use. Outrigger legs extend from both sides to hold the truck steady when the crane is deployed. The cab doors open.

The alternate model on the box is a mobile crane, so you get two builds from the same set. At 1,276 pieces it sits in the compact-to-mid range for Technic, and an experienced builder will clear it in three to four hours. Worth having in the library regardless of the age.

The build

Three to four hours, compact and well-paced

The build progresses through the chassis, the outrigger arms, and then the crane assembly at the rear. None of it is difficult, but the outrigger mechanism requires a bit of attention to get the geometry right. Once it clicks, both legs extend symmetrically and lock the truck in position exactly as they should.

The crane arm is the payoff. It extends, swings round on its base, and the hook drops cleanly on the chain. Simple mechanism, works every time. The alternate mobile crane model is a genuinely different build if you want to get more from the kit.

Worth knowing

The 42008 is a 2013 set. Brick Club still carries it because the build experience holds up. Older Technic sets tend to be more mechanical and less decorative than the modern releases, and the 42008 is a good example of that. If you want a focused crane and recovery build without the piece count of the newer working machines, this is the one to pick.

LEGO Technic Customised Pick-Up Truck (42029): Member Build

Year2014
Build time2-3 hrs

DifficultyAdvanced

The 42029 Customised Pick-Up Truck is a 2014 set and another older kit in the Brick Club library. The name tells you what it is. This is not a standard workhorse truck. The lowered stance, wide wheels, two-tone black and orange colour scheme, and the bed winch all say modified. It is a relaxed afternoon build at 1,063 pieces, good for four-wheel drive fans who want the suspension and opening panels without the complexity of the bigger off-roaders.

Set 42029

Full suspension, opening doors, and a bed winch in 1,063 pieces

All four wheels have independent suspension, which you can test by pressing down on the corners of the finished model. The doors open, the bonnet opens to show the engine, and the winch in the truck bed operates on a working drum. The customised look comes from the lowered ride height and the wide-set wheel arches rather than any single standout mechanism.

At 1,063 pieces it is an approachable build at two to three hours. The instructions are well-paced, and the suspension geometry is satisfying to put together. Good entry-level kit for anyone who wants a four-wheel drive build before stepping up to the bigger sets.

The build

An afternoon build with good suspension geometry

The suspension is the highlight here. All four corners are independent, which makes the build process satisfying as the geometry comes together. Each wheel assembly clicks into place cleanly, and the finished model has a genuine amount of travel when you push down on it.

The rest of the build is straightforward. Doors and bonnet are simple panel work. The winch drum in the bed is quick to build and operates well. Two to three hours at a relaxed pace covers it. The alternate model on the box is a different vehicle if you want to go back in and build again.

Gateway kit

The 42029 is a good starting point for anyone who wants four-wheel drive suspension and working panels without the piece count of the larger off-roaders. The Extreme Adventure (42069) and the Zetros (42129) are the natural next steps when you are ready to go bigger.

Member Build

The 1989 Batmobile. In brick form.

We have the 1989 Batmobile (76139) in the Brick Club library, and it goes out regularly. One of our members built it and sent over some photos. It is not a Technic set, no working engine mechanism, but it is a serious build. 3,306 pieces. The Tim Burton Batmobile, the one from the 1989 film, recreated at 1:12 scale with working steering, an opening cockpit canopy, and those twin rear jet exhausts that define the silhouette.

If you are a Batman fan or just appreciate a licensed replica done well, this one sits in a different category to the usual Technic builds. That is exactly why we keep it in the rotation.

What makes it interesting

The fins, the long hood, the jet-engine rear, every design detail of the 1989 film car is represented. Working front wing flaps (the side-mounted fins), rubber tyres on large custom wheels, and a knob-controlled steering mechanism. The afterburner detail at the back is one of the highlights of the build. It is a LEGO Icons set rather than Technic, but for sheer detail and presence on a shelf it holds its own.

The car that crossed the Sahara. Built by one of our members.

The Audi RS Q e-tron is the factory Dakar Rally car, an EV hybrid that ran at the 2022 Dakar and kept running. One of our Brick Club members built the Technic model (42160) and sent photos. 914 pieces, an afternoon build, all the interesting functions packed in: working all-wheel drive with front and rear axles connected, moving pistons in the electric motor housing, and opening doors.

The Dakar livery is immediately recognisable. White and red, RS Q e-tron logos, the high-clearance wide-track stance of the real car. This is the kind of build where the real-world backstory adds a lot.

LEGO Technic Bulldozer (42028): Alan’s Build Diary

Alan’s build diary: LEGO Technic Bulldozer (42028)

Alan sent nine photos covering the build from bare frame to finished model. That kind of step-by-step record is worth sharing properly, so this post walks through each stage in order.

The 42028 is a 2014 set, 1,167 pieces, classic CAT yellow. Front blade that lifts via an Ackermann push mechanism (push the exhaust pipe forward and the blade rises, clean top surface, no visible lever). Working ripper claw at the rear. Rubber tracks on both sides. The blade mechanism is one of my favourites in the Technic library for how tidy it is, especially for a set this old.

The front blade lifts via an Ackermann push mechanism connected to the exhaust pipe on top. Push it forward and the blade rises. No levers poking through the roof, no axle breaking the surface. For a 2014 set this is clean engineering, and it still holds up.

Alan’s build: Ferrari 488 GTE “AF Corse #51” (42125)

Alan built the Ferrari 488 GTE and sent six photos, including the V8 engine bay before the cover goes on. That shot is the one I always want to see with this set, so it is leading the photo section below.

The 42125 is a licensed replica of the #51 AF Corse entry as raced at Le Mans and in the FIA WEC. 1,677 pieces, working V8 with moving pistons visible through the rear, opening doors, opening bonnet and engine cover. The red livery is bright on a shelf. 4-5 hours for an experienced builder, with the V8 sub-assembly being the most fiddly section.

Alan nailed the BMW M 1000 RR

Alan sent these over recently and they’re brilliant. The BMW M 1000 RR (42130) is a 1,920-piece, 1:5 scale replica of BMW’s top-tier Superbike Championship machine, and it’s one of the most technically interesting motorbike kits in the library.

The standout feature is the working gearbox. Six speeds, each one selectable by lever while the model is in your hands. You can feel it click through the ratios. Pair that with the moving inline-4 pistons visible under the fairing panels, and this kit does a proper job of showing off what the real bike is packing.

Alan put in a solid 5-6 hours on this. From the photos you can see the white, blue, and red M livery sitting cleanly against the frame, and the front suspension geometry looking exactly right.

The gearbox

This is the feature that keeps catching people out. It’s a genuine 6-speed sequential gearbox built into the model. You shift it with a lever, it clicks through each ratio, and you can feel it engaging. LEGO packed more mechanical engineering into this motorbike than most car kits get.

The fairing panels are worth mentioning separately. They clip on and unclip cleanly, so once the build is done you’re not just looking at the outside. Pull the panels off and there’s a fully realised engine bay underneath, with the inline-4 layout, the gearbox mechanism, and the suspension all visible at once. It’s a proper display kit.

Worth knowing

The linked brake system means pulling the front lever operates the rear too, just like the real bike. Small detail, but it’s exactly the kind of thing that makes this kit feel like a licensed replica rather than a generic motorbike build.

Alan has worked through enough of the library now that his photos are useful in a different way to product shots. They show the kit as a builder actually sees it: on a table, built in normal light, with the little mechanical details doing the talking.

Alan’s Bugatti Chiron, 3,599 pieces done

Alan sent photos of his Bugatti Chiron (42083) build and it looks exactly as it should. This is one of the flagship kits in the library, a 1:8 scale replica of the 1,500bhp W16-powered hypercar, and at 3,599 pieces, it earns the 7-8 hours most members put into it.

The W16 engine is the centrepiece. All 16 pistons move in sync as you turn the wheels, and the rear section opens to expose the full engine layout. The active rear spoiler has a push-to-deploy mechanism, and the 8-speed gearbox is fully functional. You can shift it by hand while the model is on the desk in front of you.

Alan’s photos show the blue and black Chiron Sport livery coming together cleanly. This is the kind of build that takes up most of an evening but leaves you with something worth putting on display.

The W16 engine

LEGO built all 16 pistons to move in the correct sequence. Turn the rear wheels and you can watch the engine cycle through. The rear clamshell section opens to put the whole layout on show, which is exactly what you want after spending 7 hours building it.

The active rear spoiler is worth spending a minute on. The real Chiron deploys its spoiler at speed, it’s part of the aeroactive management system on a car that weighs 1,995kg and does over 260mph. LEGO’s version has a mechanical push-to-deploy mechanism that snaps it up cleanly. Small thing, but it’s a nice detail on a licensed flagship.

Alan takes on the Heavy-Duty Tow Truck

Alan is one of our Brick Club subscribers and he sent over photos of his completed 42128 build. This is a set I always enjoy seeing finished because the sheer scale of it makes for a satisfying photo.

The Heavy-Duty Tow Truck is 2,017 pieces and sits comfortably in that 5-6 hour bracket. It is not a rush job and the build sequence rewards patience, particularly when you get into the boom and winch mechanism in the later stages.

What makes this one

The boom extension mechanism is the standout feature. There is a real positive action to it, the boom slides out smoothly and locks in a way that feels intentional rather than just resting in position. The outriggers deploy for stability and the winch hook actually lowers on a cable. This is proper working functionality, not just cosmetic.

The two-speed gearbox is controlled via a lever on the cab roof. It is a small detail but one that ties the model together as a proper working vehicle rather than a static display piece. Opening doors, the engine visible through the side grille, outriggers that you actually deploy before extending the boom. Alan has got it all looking great in his photos.

Alan has worked through enough of the library now that his photos are useful in a different way to product shots. They show the kit as a builder actually sees it: on a table, built in normal light, with the little mechanical details doing the talking.

If you have built Heavy-Duty Tow Truck and spotted something I have missed, send it over. The member posts are better when they feel like a record of what people are actually building, not just a list of sets we happen to stock.
