The best LEGO Technic sets to build with a child

The flagship sets get most of the attention, but some of the best builds in the library work brilliantly as parent-and-child projects. These are full, mechanically detailed builds that just happen to be more accessible in size and piece count.

If you have a child aged 10 and up who is interested in how things work, these are the kits that will hold their attention from bag one to the last panel.

01

Ford GT (42154) — 1,466 pieces

Clean, well-structured instructions and a satisfying build arc. Bonnet opens, V6 visible, Le Mans livery looks excellent finished. A 4-5 hour build with enough complexity to keep older children engaged.

02

McLaren P1 (42172) — 1,343 pieces

Bright papaya orange, good proportions, and a build that introduces rear suspension and engine detail without being overwhelming. Often the first Technic supercar members build with younger family members.

03

Dom’s Dodge Charger (42111) — 1,077 pieces

The Fast and Furious car. Bright orange, recognisable to most children over ten, and focused on the V8 engine and suspension rather than complex aerodynamics.

04

Lamborghini Huracán Tecnica (42161) — 806 pieces

The smallest Lamborghini in the library. Under 1,000 pieces but properly detailed. A good two-evening build, and an excellent first Technic supercar for anyone new to the range.

05

McLaren Formula 1 Race Car (42141) — 1,432 pieces

If the child is an F1 fan, this is the one. The papaya McLaren livery, 2022 car proportions, and working DRS make it immediately recognisable and genuinely exciting to build.
