Bugatti Chiron vs McLaren P1: which should you build first?
Two of the most popular kits in the library, and they get compared constantly. The Bugatti Chiron is 3,599 pieces, expert-level. The McLaren P1 is 1,343 pieces, firmly intermediate. They are different animals, but members regularly ask which one to start with.
First large Technic supercar: start with the P1
The McLaren P1 has a proper V8, working suspension, and accurate proportions. But the instruction pacing is kinder and you will finish it in a long evening rather than across an entire weekend. If the Chiron is your ambition, the P1 is a good way to build the skills to enjoy it properly.
Built large sets before: go straight to the Chiron
The W16 with moving pistons, the deployable rear wing, and the Atlantic Blue colour scheme make this one of the most satisfying expert builds in the collection. If you are comfortable with complex instruction sequences, you will not regret going to the Chiron first.
For display: the Chiron wins on presence
The finished Bugatti Chiron is 56 cm long and commands a shelf. If you are building primarily to display the model, the Chiron is the right choice. The P1 is excellent, but different in scale and presence.
Building with someone else: the P1
At 1,343 pieces the P1 is a better co-build kit. Two people can work through it without one always waiting for the other. The Chiron suits one builder at a time more naturally.
