The blue flagship that set the pattern
The Bugatti Chiron helped establish the format LEGO still uses for its largest Technic cars: a detailed gearbox and engine first, a long rolling chassis next, then a recognisable body built around the mechanism.
Released in 2018 with 3,599 pieces, it combines an eight-speed gearbox operated by paddle shifters, a W16 engine with moving pistons, steering and suspension. A special top-speed key changes the position of the rear wing.
Why the gearbox still matters
The Chiron’s gearbox is buried deep in the centre of the car. Building it is a careful sequence of axles, gears, selectors and driving rings, followed by the W16 engine behind it. Turning the wheels transfers motion through the drivetrain so the pistons move in their cylinders.
This is where accuracy matters most. Check axle lengths, make sure gears can turn freely and use the paddles to move through the sequence while the chassis is open. The mechanism should feel firm but consistent. A sudden hard stop means something needs checking.
What happens when the bodywork arrives
The two-tone blue shell changes the model quickly. Long curves form the doors, roof and sweeping side profile, while the rear structure supports the wing. The doors open, the steering works from the cabin and the top-speed key adjusts the wing position.
The rear wing does not deploy automatically when the car is pushed, as the previous version of this article claimed. It is a manual mechanism operated with the supplied key. The W16 is also part of the built-in drivetrain, not a removable display engine.
A retired set worth revisiting
Newer Technic cars have refined the gearbox formula and added more complex body shaping, but the Chiron remains a strong build. Its mechanical core is substantial, the blue body is distinctive and the finished car has enough presence to justify the time spent on it.
Move the paddle shifter through the gearbox and turn the drivetrain by hand before fitting the seats and blue body panels.
