LEGO Technic Mobile Crane MK II (42108): Yet Another member Finished Build

Set 42108
Pieces 2,606
Build time 5-6 hrs
Difficulty Advanced
Year 2020

The 42108 is one of those kits that just keeps going. This is the third time a member has sent photos back of a completed build, and honestly it keeps happening because the kit earns it. 2,606 pieces, a working pneumatic boom, and enough going on mechanically that you’re still finding clever bits on the last few bags.

One photo this time, but it’s a good one.

More to build

The useful thing about a second or third member build is that it stops the post feeling like a one-off. Different builders notice different parts of the same kit, and the photos always come out slightly differently.

That is why I keep publishing repeat builds when they come in. If a kit keeps being requested, that tells me something about the library. If members keep sending photos, that tells me even more.

LEGO Technic Heavy-Duty Tow Truck (42128): Another Member Build

Pieces 2,017
Year 2021
Build time 4-5 hrs
Models 1
Difficulty Advanced

Another member has sent photos of their 42128, and this set of shots is a bit different from the last one. The action photo shows the crane arm out and deployed, which is the whole point of the model. You can see the outriggers extended, the boom arm raised, the hook hanging on the winch cable. That is what the thing is for.

Set 42128

The crane does the work. The rest of the truck exists to support it.

The 42128 is built around the rear crane and nothing else. Front axle steering, extendable outrigger legs, rotating boom, rack-driven extension, winch with a real hook on cable: those are the functions. The cab and body are there to carry them. Open the bonnet and there is a V8 with moving pistons, but that is a secondary detail.

At 2,017 pieces most of the count goes on the crane mechanism and the cab interior. The outriggers extend from the sides via a single drive axle; turn the knob and all four legs deploy together. The boom arm extends on a rack and can rotate. The winch runs an axle through the length of the body up to the cab-roof knob. It is a lot of mechanism for the size of the box.

The build

Sub-assemblies first, then it all makes sense

The build sequence works in modules. You build the winch drum, the outrigger arms, the boom extension mechanism, and the V8 block as separate units before the chassis goes together around them. Nothing is difficult but the instruction pace is steady. Plan for four hours minimum.

Steering connects to a rack at the front axle. The boom arm runs on a rack too, so extension is smooth rather than notchy. The hand-winch axle runs the length of the body, which is a neat piece of routing through the frame. It rewards looking at how each part connects before you fit it.

Build highlight

The crane mechanism is what this set is about. Boom raises and extends, hook lowers on cable, outriggers deploy and lock. The action photo shows all three in use at once. That photo is worth looking at before you start the build, because it tells you what the end point looks like and why each sub-assembly matters.

LEGO Technic Bugatti Chiron (42083): Master Builder Build

Master Builder Build

42083 Bugatti Chiron – 3,599 pieces, fully built

One of our Master Builder members finished the Bugatti Chiron and sent me the photos. I have been waiting for someone to tackle this one properly. It is a 1:8 scale model in Bugatti Speed Blue with orange accents, and at 3,599 pieces it is one of the longest builds in the library.

The 8-speed gearbox works. You can change through the gears by hand once it is built. That alone takes a fair bit of the build time. The W16 engine is visible through the rear window, with 16 cylinders and connecting rods that move as you push the car. The spoiler pops up automatically when the chassis lever engages it.

This is a 2018 kit, the flagship licensed set that year. LEGO used custom-moulded bodywork panels throughout, so the build process is different from a standard Technic, more visual, more cars-specific. The W16 sequence on its own takes around two hours.

About the Master Builder tier

Master Builder is our top membership tier. Members on this tier get access to the most complex kits in the library, including licensed flagships and anything above around 2,500 pieces. The Chiron is a good example of what the tier is for. If you have finished a few of the intermediate kits and want something that will take a full weekend, this is the right step up.

Also in the library

This is exactly why I like putting member builds on the blog. The official images tell you what a kit is supposed to look like. Member photos show what it feels like once someone has actually sat down, opened the bags, and worked through it.

If you have just finished Bugatti Chiron, send over a few photos. It does not need to be a full studio setup. A clean table, a finished build, and a few notes on what stood out are enough.

LEGO Technic Car Transporter (42098): Member Build

Member Build

Car Transporter (42098)

One of our members tackled the Car Transporter and sent through photos. Three separate builds in one box: the transporter itself, plus two small cars that load and unload via the working hydraulic ramp. 2,493 pieces across the lot.

The upper deck tilts on a knob-driven mechanism so the cars sit level during transport. Both small cars are proper Technic models with suspension and steering – not placeholders. The cab opens, there’s sleeper cab detail inside, and the whole thing is one of the longer footprints in the library when fully extended.

How the ramp works

A knob on the rear section drives the hydraulic ramp up and down. Wind it up, park the two cars on the upper deck, and the deck tilts back level so they sit flat. Wind it back down to unload. Both small cars roll on and off under their own wheels – they have working suspension.

The piece count is split three ways, which changes how the build feels. You finish one of the small cars, set it aside, build the other, then tackle the transporter. By the time the ramp mechanism goes together you’ve already got two cars ready to load onto it. Good pacing for the complexity level.

One thing worth knowing: the model is long. Check you have a decent run of table or shelf before you start – it needs the space when fully extended with both decks out.

LEGO Technic Extreme Adventure (42069): Member Build

Set 42069

Member Build

Built and sent in by one of our members

One of our members sent in photos of the 42069 Extreme Adventure, and I am glad they did because this is one of those Technic sets that looks better once you have actually built it.

On the box it is a big orange and black expedition truck. Fair enough. Once it is on the table, the clever bit is how much movement LEGO managed to work into it without making it feel fragile. Four-wheel drive, working suspension on all four corners, a front winch, opening cabin sections, and that rear expedition tent that actually folds out properly.

It is not just decoration. That matters.

At 2,382 pieces, this is not a quick evening build. I would put it in the solid weekend category. The chassis comes first, and that is where the set earns its Technic badge. You are building the running gear before you get the expedition bodywork, so the model feels mechanical before it starts looking complete.

The chassis

The 42069 came out in 2017, but it still holds up well next to newer off-road kits in the library. The tyres give it the right stance straight away, and the body has enough height that it feels like a proper crawler rather than a display car with big wheels. Sit it on uneven ground and it does not just sit flat. It leans into it.

What makes it worth building

The rear tent and cabin assembly is the part that makes it memorable. A lot of Technic sets give you a function and then hide it. This one keeps the fun visible. You can open it up, show someone what it does, fold it back down, and it still looks like a finished off-road truck rather than a compromise.

If you like the Mercedes G 500 or Zetros Trial Truck, this sits in the same family but with a different feel. Less polished road-going 4×4, more expedition machine. Chunky, slightly odd, and better for it.

I like member photos like this because they show the set away from the perfect product-image angle. You see the scale, the stance, and the bits that made someone stop mid-build to take a picture. That is usually where the real story is.

If you have built this one, I would be interested to know what you thought of the rear body articulation. Drop a comment on Facebook or send over your finished build photos.

Built and sent in by one of our members

One of our Brick Club subscribers built the Yamaha MT-10 SP and sent a photo. The 42159 is a licensed replica of the SP livery variant (the yellow and gold version), and at 1,478 pieces it is one of the more focused builds in the library rather than the biggest.

The inline-4 engine with working pistons is the real reason to build it. The chain drive connects the engine to the rear wheel, so as the wheel spins the pistons fire. Front fork suspension, rear shock absorber, working steering, and a kickstand round it out.

Worth knowing before you rent it

Not the biggest kit in the library but the detail level is high for its size. The engine bay is visible and correct, the chain drive is a lovely touch, and it builds faster than the larger models. Good choice if you want something with real mechanical interest that you can finish in a weekend.

897 pieces, one satisfied builder

One of our members sent three photos after finishing the MT-07 and this build deserves the full look. The Yamaha MT-07 (42139) is a licensed replica at around 1:5 scale, and it packs in more function than the piece count suggests.

The parallel-twin engine is clearly visible once the body panels are on. You can see both cylinders and, when you turn the rear wheel by hand, the crankshaft movement is right there in front of you. It is not hidden under a cover. That engine detail is one of the things that makes the licensed moto kits worth building.

Working steering, rear suspension, and a kickstand are all present. At 897 pieces it is one of the shorter afternoon builds in the library, but it does not feel cut down.

Scale ~1:5 licensed replica
Engine detail Parallel-twin, moving pistons
Function Steering, rear suspension, kickstand

Good to know

If you have not done a licensed moto kit before, the MT-07 is a good place to start. It is a bit lighter than the MT-10 SP (1,478 pieces) and builds in a realistic session. The engine assembly is the highlight and you spend proper time on it mid-build.

Good afternoon build, different shape entirely

One of our subscribers sent these photos of the Air Race Jet (42066) and it is worth a look. This is a 2017 set and it stands out in the library because of the shape. Most builds in here are cars and trucks. The 42066 is a low-slung jet aircraft loosely based on the kind of aircraft used in Red Bull Air Race, and it looks completely different on the shelf.

The twin engines each have spinning turbine blades driven by a knob on top. The fan blades are sub-assembled before they go in, so you spend a proper amount of build time inside each engine before dropping the assembly in. That section is the highlight. Working flaps and ailerons are in there too, and the undercarriage retracts.

At 1,151 pieces it fits in a good afternoon session. Nothing about this build drags.

The turbine sub-assemblies are worth taking your time on. Each fan blade cluster goes in as a unit and you can see the full detail before the housing closes over. One of those build moments where slowing down pays off.

No rear wing. That is the point.

One of our members built the Peugeot 9X8 Le Mans Hypercar and sent photos. The real car raced at Le Mans in 2022 and 2023 without a rear wing, which is the most striking thing about it. Peugeot generated downforce through the underbody instead. Bold call. The LEGO model replicates it exactly.

The real car

The Peugeot 9X8 is a hybrid LMP1-class hypercar that raced at Le Mans 2022 and 2023 as a works entry for Peugeot TotalEnergies. The defining detail is the missing rear wing. Peugeot deliberately removed it, betting on underbody aeroactives to generate the same downforce. The gamble was visible from the grandstands. The LEGO model keeps the same clean tail.

LEGO Technic Ocean Explorer (42064): Member Build

Not a speedboat. A proper research ship.

One of our members built the Ocean Explorer (42064) and sent photos. This is a research vessel, not a racing boat. It sits differently in the hand compared to most Technic kits. The hull is a solid sub-assembly, unlike the open framework you get with cars and trucks, which makes the early stages of the build feel unusual in a good way.

1,327 pieces. Working crane on the rear deck for deploying and recovering equipment. Working winch. A propeller under the hull. The white and orange colour scheme stands out in the library.

What makes this kit different

Most Technic kits are built around an open framework. Cars, trucks, cranes – you can see the structure throughout. The Ocean Explorer builds a solid hull first, which is a different experience. The hull sub-assembly alone is worth building just to understand how LEGO handles a closed form. Add life rafts, radar equipment, a rear crane, a working winch, and a propeller, and you end up with something that feels complete in a way a lot of vehicle kits do not.
